After a few preliminary fights, Hasan Celik from Chessboxing Cologne competed against Leonard Bockting from Chessboxing Berlin in the main event in the weight class up to 80kg. It was about the Berlin LBF belt and the tension was literally in the room.
In advance, trainer and promoter Denno Probst, who supported Celik with his team Chessboxing Cologne on the way to the world title in 2023, had advised Hasan against this fight. “A fight between world champion and bronze medalist in his weight class and city is quite unusual.” Since Hasan continued to insist on the fight, he was supported in his ring corner by Chessboxing Paris and Chessboxing Prague co-founder and reigning world champion Marcel Valentin.
The fight began with Celik in a passive position and a pawn attack on his castled king. Bockting went into the subsequent boxing round confidently and dominated Hasan with hard hits to the head, which he took surprisingly well. If there had been judges on site, they would have clearly awarded every boxing round to the Berliner.
However, something different became apparent on the board: after initial difficulties, Celik increasingly gained a better position and was even able to convert a passed pawn into a queen in round 7.
Bockting had recently lost all of his minor pieces and finally gave up in round 9. Both on this evening and at the World Championships, Leo proved himself to be a fighter. Hasan's taking skills are outstanding, but in this duel he was grateful for Orcachess ' predetermined chess tactics .
